After 20 years as an art therapist, I have brought clinical theory together with a series of over 50 original process paintings to address the very common experience of burn out. Part fairy tale, part masterclass, I look at Vicarious Trauma through the lens of Psychoanalytic, Jungian, Feminist, Narrative, and Mindfulness theory. Full of easy to do exercises and written in my approachable style, you will get many ways to look at the work of being a therapist.  I can not wait for you to see it. #vicarioustraumaillastrated

"With candor and humility, Rebecca Bloom provided an accessible introductory toolkit for therapists and and healing workers to stay present in their clients' struggles without internalizing the pain.By including her own developing process as a therapist, feminist, and teacher, she maps a personal journey through art and life, one that can be applied to a broad range of social justice work. Rather than a distant guidebook, Vicarious Trauma Illustrated offers an intimate journey toward a grounded engagement with self and society."
-Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, author of Sketchtasy

"Vicarious Trauma Illustrated is a must read for anyone interested in understanding vicarious and secondary trauma. The book is beautiful and illustrative. Bloom’s images and hand written text move the reader through the emotional journey of this book in an embodied way. This is a book readers will feel as much as read."
--Cristien Storm, LMHC and author of “Empowered Boundaries: Speaking Truth, Setting Boundaries and Inspiring Social Change”

Thank you's

I learned so much while making this book. I took a fantastic cartooning class at Hugo House, I got over my fear of hand lettering in a class taught by LettersbyShells and I watched an amazing Masterclass series with Margaret Atwood.
Dr. Brandy Paris was my content organizer, Nityia Przewlocki took my fantastic head shots, Melinda Hurst Frye photographed the art work.  My family still allows me half the dining room table for my painting studio.

Wet on Wet Watercolor

I painted for hour and hours, for every image in the book there are five that got tossed.  Wet on Wet watercolor is an incredibly freeing process. The image gets built up with several layers of paint, with texture being added with salt and places being wiped away with paper towels.  Since it is process painting, it is completely free form, with no sketches and no right or wrong way to do it.

Need a coffee cup, journal or bag?

Great Merch from images from the book.
