Services What is Art Therapy?

People often ask “what will I do in an art therapy session?” "I'm not artistic, is this really for me?" Absolutely. Art therapy is for everyone.

This page includes a few sample directives. We might begin the session with you creating an image on the statement "How I felt this week..." Other examples of materials we might use include: collage, sculpture, mandalas, Polaroid portraits, markers, dolls, mask-making, found art assemblage. . . the possibilities are near limitless.

As you are comfortable, we can use the art as a jumping off point for our session. The art you make might surprise you or cause you to see things differently. Because art transcends words, triggering different parts of the brain and subconscious, you may find that you are able to reach a new depth of understanding never experienced before - even if you've tried years of talk therapy in the past.
