What is Art Therapy? | ||||||
What will we do? | ||||||
People often ask “what will I do in an art therapy session?” "I'm not artistic, is this really for me?" Absolutely. Art therapy is for everyone. Here is a sample directive.

We might begin the session with you creating an image on this statement. Other examples of materials we might use include: collage, sculpture, mandalas, Polaroid portraits, markers, dolls, mask-making, found art assemblage... We will then use the art as a jumping off point for our session. The art you make might surprise you or cause you to see things differently. Because art transcends words, triggering different parts of the brain and subconscious, you may find that you are able to reach a new depth of understanding never experienced before - even if you've tried years of talk therapy in the past. Many people are afraid of their own creative expression, but please don't let that stop you. I know you probably haven’t drawn since elementary school. We aren’t looking for masterpieces. The value is in the experience of making the art. For more information on art therapy and other counseling options, follow these links...
